OAR Community Service Program staff work closely with placement site organizations to ensure that workers are well matched and that the work proceeds smoothly.
The placement site organization is a key component of restorative justice and provides an extraordinary contribution to the community at large.
Guidelines for Supervision
Arrival and Departure. It is imperative that the Community Service worker arrives on time. Do not feel that it is inappropriate to ask him or her to treat it like a job and arrive in a timely manner. The site Supervisor and Community Service Case Manager shall determine the schedule. |
Assignments. Discuss the details of the assigned projects with the worker. As the Supervisor, it is important that you are as thorough as possible, and that the worker clearly understands what is expected or him or her. |
Attitude. Community Service workers are expected to be cooperative at all times. If an individual’s behavior is causing a disturbance within the agency, please deal with it accordingly. Dismiss the worker immediately if you deem this action necessary, and notify the community service case manager as soon as possible. |
Breaks. Breaks are given at the discretion of the site Supervisor. |
Dress Code. Community Service workers are expected to dress appropriately. Revealing clothing, excessive jewelry or overly casual attire is not permitted at the work site. If the community service worker is dressed inappropriately, discuss the situation with the individual and if necessary dismiss him or her for the day. |
Do’s and Don’ts of Supervising Community Service Workers
DO:
Discuss agency rules and expectations with the Community Service worker. |
Plan a daily schedule for the Community Service worker that allows you to complete your work while supervising the worker. |
Record the number of hours completed by the worker on the attendance report form. |
Find another staff person to supervise the Community Service worker if you must leave the office for an extended amount of time during the workday. |
Notify the OAR Case Manager by the end of the day if the Community Service worker fails to cooperate with office rules and expectations. |
Fax or mail the attendance report form back to the OAR Community Service Case Manager when a worker completes his or her hours. |
DON’T:
Leave the Community Service worker unsupervised for an extended period. |
Ask the Community Service worker questions about his or her charge or arrest. The supervisor of the placement site organization has a right to know the worker’s charge, but that request should go to the OAR Case Manager. |
Allow an OAR Community Service worker to begin working at your agency before speaking with an OAR Community Service Case Manager. |
