Did you know that 1 in every 31 U.S. adults are incarcerated or on probation or parole? Those and many other astonishing facts are discussed on OAR Today. OAR Today is a monthly show about issues that face offenders and the community when offenders return home. Gail Arnall, OAR Executive Director, is the show's host and she interviews experts and partners connected to OAR, clients who are working with OAR to reenter the community while becoming productive citizens, and clients who are repaying their debt to our community through Court Mandated Community Service hours. When you watch OAR Today you will get to hear the life stories of offenders and learn about the work that OAR does with those individuals and families in our neighborhoods in Arlington County and the Cities of Alexandria and Falls Church. OAR Today is produced by Elizabeth Jones Valderrama. To reach Elizabeth and learn more about OAR call 703-228-7441.

Tips for Parents
- Open communication is important.
- Know who your children are friends with and interacting with.
- Model good boundaries in your own lives. For example everyone needs privacy and this should be shown to children by demonstrating that certain behaviors are private (i.e. dressing, toileting, bathing)
- Teach children that when they say no, it will be respected. For example, if a child does not want to kiss his uncle, then do not force him or her to do so.
- Practice talking about difficult subjects on a regular basis. You can model to your children that any topic is okay to talk about.
- Teach children what is good touch and bad touch.
- Tell children that keeping secrets about touching or keeping secrets with another adult is not okay.
- Be careful that children are not introduced to sexuality before they are developmentally ready for it. So at age 5-6 – talk about body parts; pre-adolescent – talk about puberty and the role of sex in creating babies (not the fun of it). As adolescents, talk about relationships and rules about sexual behavior.
- For Kindergarten through grade 4: It’s So Amazing: A book about eggs, sperm, birth, babies and families by Robie Harris and Michael Emberley
- For grade 4 through 8: It’s perfectly normal: Changing bodies, growing up, sex and sexual health by Robie Harris and Michael Emberley
- For adolescents: American Medical Association Girl’s Guide to Becoming a Teen and American Medical Association Boy’s Guide to Becoming a Teen both by AMA, K. Gruenwald, and A. Middleman
- Watch for signs of abuse and speak up when you suspect something or see a warning sign.
