The Spirit of Volunteerism at OAR
The spirit of volunteerism permeates every program and service offered by Offender Aid and Restoration. Board of directors, professional staff, program coordinators, interns, community service workers – all contribute to a real world operational model of restorative justice.
Volunteerism and the Education Services Program
Like many other OAR programs, the Education Services Program would not be possible without the extensive involvement of volunteers. The Education Services Program for both inside and outside of the detention center is able to assist men and women who are committed to overcoming the barriers that often lead to re-incarceration. Community Volunteers facilitate groups, provide technical and vocational training, coordinate community service projects, and serve as life coaches and tutors for individual participants.
OAR and the Points of Light Award
On July 19, 2002, OAR was honored by the Points of Light foundation with a Daily Point of Light award recognizing the outstanding contributions of community volunteers to the one of OAR’s programs. The Daily Point of Light award honors “those who exemplify the best of volunteerism - a sense of caring and responsibility for others that connects citizens and solves community problems.”
OAR Volunteers and Restorative Justice
OAR’s many volunteers represent the communities ultimately served by the process of restorative justice. In the end, as transitions progress and justice is restored, offenders return to the community as our neighbors, fellow commuters, grocery store clerks, church members, tax payers, concerned parents, and yes, very often, volunteers.
