I am so excited to share with you all of the successes OAR participants have achieved in the fiscal year 2018 thanks to your support! We have included some statistics below. Please make sure to read Thomas' story and see how your contributions have truly made an impact in the lives of OAR participants just like him.

A number of OAR volunteers were honored at this year's Volunteer Arlington "Arlington Cares" event for completing over 100 hours of service in the past year. Isn't that amazing? We are so grateful for such dedicated volunteers who work hard to support OAR's mission. Thank you to all our wonderful volunteers and congratulations once again to everyone who was honored at this event! More details on this celebration can be found below in our "Volunteer Spotlight" section.

OAR's 1st Annual "Project Backpack" was a huge success! This back-to-school program provided backpacks and school supplies to children of parents incarcerated. for the upcoming school year. Your support made this happen. See more details below.

Thank you, our friends, volunteers, and community partners for your continued support. We wouldn't be able to give individuals the second and fair chance they deserve without your generosity!

  • 635 individuals received Reentry assistance (both pre and post-release)
  • 100 units of food, 850 units of transportation, 373 units of clothing, and 15 IDs were provided for Reentry participants

A Participant Story: Meet "Thomas"*

Thomas's involvement in the criminal justice system began at an early age. Since he was eleven years old, Thomas had not spent a Thanksgiving or Christmas at home. He was finishing an eight-year sentence at Coffeewood Correctional Center in Culpeper, VA, which he received in 2010, less than four months after being released from a twelve-year sentence. However, this time around, Thomas was looking to do something different with his life upon his release.

Thomas first encountered OAR while he was incarcerated at Coffeewood Correctional Center. From July 2017 until his release in January 2018, Thomas met with OAR staff once every week for two-hour sessions to work on his reentry plan. He worked with OAR's Reentry team to identify his major criminogenic risk factors and through behavioral therapy, motivational interviewing, and trauma-informed care, the OAR team was able to assist Thomas in his process of self-discovery. OAR also worked with Thomas to reconnect with his family prior to his release, which was a huge step in his journey.

After his release in January 2018, OAR continued to assist Thomas with transition planning and provided him with basic needs such as transportation assistance, hygiene items, clothing, and OAR even provided Thomas with a cell phone and helped with the monthly payments. OAR was also able to support Thomas with his mental health needs by helping him develop a medication adherence regimen, working on strengthening his interpersonal skills, as well as connecting him with mental health services provided from other public and non-profit social service agencies.

With your support, OAR is able to help individuals like Thomas through their reentry journey. Thank you for joining us in giving these individuals the second and fair chance they deserve in this community.

OAR's 1st Annual "Project Backpack"

OAR's new back-to-school program, "Project Backpack," provides backpacks and school supplies to children who have a parent incarcerated in the Arlington County Detention Facility. On Thursday, August 2nd, 42 volunteers joined us at Christ Church of Arlington for our pilot program; to pack and prepare the backpacks for delivery to the boys and girls. All 171 children participating in this program were able to receive a brand new backpack filled with school supplies as well as a handwritten note from their parent incarcerated. For children who live locally, volunteers are hand-delivering the gifts to their homes. For children who live outside of our delivery area, the items were mailed to them. We want to thank all of you for supporting Project Backpack with donations of supplies, financial contributions, by hosting donation boxes and volunteering in any capacity. A very special thanks to Christ Church of Arlington for providing us with the space for the event, Catholic Charities DC for donating 50 backpacks and for having a full table of volunteers at the event, and Liberty Tavern for donating delicious pizza for the event! Thanks to all of you, 171 children will know that their parent is thinking of them and wishing them well for the upcoming school year. Stay tuned on our social media for more pictures of the event!
