Hello *{{Informal Name}}*, Happy Halloween!
We hope October brought you many moments of joy. It is always a joyful moment at OAR when we hear about the love and happiness OAR participants like William bring to others while doing meaningful work in the community. We are excited to share William's story with you. Please read about William's journey with OAR below and see additional ways to learn more about OAR's programs, upcoming events, and support. A special reminder if you are preparing for any Halloween festivities tonight, please make sure to check out these important safety reminders: -
If you are dressing up, ensure your costume is respectful of all races, ethnicities, cultures, backgrounds, etc. We want everyone in the community to feel love and respect.
- Carry glow sticks or flashlights, use reflective tape or stickers on costumes and bags, and wear light colors to help kids see and be seen by drivers.
-
Join kids under age 12 for trick-or-treating.
- Slow down and be alert! People are excited about Halloween and may dart into the street.
- Turn on headlights early in the day to spot kids from further away.
-
Remind people to cross the street at corners or crosswalks.
- When selecting a costume, ensure it is the right size to prevent trips and falls.
- Choose face paint over masks when possible. Masks can limit children's vision.
- Have fun!
Remember to stay bundled up as the weather gets colder outside. We are wishing everyone a safe and happy Halloween! Thank you for being on this journey with us.

Alternative Sentencing + Diversion William's Journey |
OAR works with Arlington County and the City of Falls Church Courts to provide alternative sentencing programs and in partnership with the Vera Institute and Office of the Commonwealth's Attorney - Arlington County and the City of Falls Church for a Diversion program with the goal of reducing recidivism as well as racial disparities amongst individuals sentenced to diversion programs. Through alternative sentencing and diversion, people are able to stay with their families, continue working or going to school, give back to the community, & avoid the lifelong burdens, and collateral consequences to families and children, that come with incarceration.
OAR reached out to William* for a phone intake after he was assigned to complete 25 hours of community service. During his phone intake, William first expressed his concerns about finding a volunteer site due to his busy work schedule, but OAR was able to help with his concerns by connecting him to sites that would work best with his schedule. Volunteering at the local parks and recreation facilities worked great for William. He completed his community service hours well before his court hearing and successfully closed his case. William’s hard work was recognized by the site coordinator, where he volunteered. The site coordinator reached out to OAR, telling us, "It was great having William as a volunteer because he kept everyone laughing despite the very hard work.” Through OAR’s Alternative Sentencing + Diversion program, William could avoid the trauma of incarceration and instead stay in the community doing meaningful work while also bringing joy and laughter to others. OAR is a community-based nonprofit organization that envisions a safe & thriving community where those impacted by the legal system enjoy equal civil & human rights. Through our Upstream work, we are confronting & dismantling individual racism & racism in the legal system & across all systems. Our Downstream work allows us to be on the journey with individuals returning from incarceration & their families. We also offer alternative sentencing options (including community service) and diversion programs so people can avoid the trauma of incarceration & instead help the community thrive.
OAR is a collective, non-dominant, decolonizing, pro-Black, racially just, radically joyful, deeply loving, come as you are, liberated organization that puts participants first. We center authentic and fully engaged relationships with all members of the OAR community. |
