,

Happy Halloween! I hope you and your loved ones are able to enjoy some time together. October brought several opportunities for us to spend time as a community learning and in support of this incredible mission.

Thank you to all who supported the 4th Annual "Sing Out for Second Chances" event held at The Church at Clarendon on Sunday, October 20th. We had musical groups from local faith-based communities perform songs in celebration of second and fair chances for all. Read below for pictures and more details about the event.

We had our second workshop of "Undoing Racism," the signature workshop of the People's Institute for Survival and Beyond (PISAB). We are scheduling dates for 2020 so stay tuned for those dates. In the meantime, you can read more about the "Undoing Racism" workshop and how to apply below in our "Upcoming Events" section and join us in reading the featured book of the month which is a great resource to assist in the dialogue about race equity.

We have begun collecting new, donated gifts and toys for children who have a parent incarcerated locally for this holiday season and we need your help! Read more below to see how you can support OAR's Toy Drive and Project Winter Cheer this year.

Although the Fall season brings about many new and exciting changes, we know one thing that always remains constant is your incredible support! We are grateful to have supporters like you, join us on the journey towards restorative justice and making the community a safe and thriving place for the many men and women who are returning home from incarceration, like Alexis, who I am thrilled for you to get to know. Wishing you a happy and safe Halloween!

"Sing Out for Second Chances" celebrated second and fair chances for all!

OAR held the 4th Annual "Sing Out for Second Chances" event on rainy Sunday, October 20th at The Church at Clarendon in Arlington. The event featured three local faith-based musical groups that performed inspiring songs in celebration of second chances and fair chances. In between the performances, speakers from OAR shared information and stories about OAR's mission and programs. This event was a fundraiser for OAR and all of the gifts collected will directly benefit OAR's programs. Thank you to all who joined us especially our choirs featured below, and our host, The Church at Clarendon! Below are several photos from the event. A Participant Story: Meet "Alexis"*

Originally from the Virginia Beach area, Alexis was incarcerated and relocated to finish out the remainder of her sentence in Alexandria through a probation program. Being ordered to finish her sentence so far away from home and her family, Alexis felt alone, scared, and confused. Just when Alexis started feeling like she had no one to turn to figure out her next steps, she got connected to OAR through her probation program. Like many of the individuals who come to see us, Alexis did not have copies of any of her legal documents including her ID, social security card, and birth certificate. These documents are often lost in transit or during incarceration. OAR helped her retrieve all of those necessary documents so she could start applying for jobs. In the following weeks, Alexis worked with an OAR Reentry team member on her resume and how to properly disclose her background to potential employers. Prior to her incarceration, Alexis worked in the medical field for 17 years. She expressed that she wanted to get back into the medical field, but was worried that with her record she would not get a chance to get back into that field again. Seeing how passionate Alexis was to get back into the medical field her OAR Reentry team member encouraged her to see if any local doctor's offices were hiring. With much determination, Alexis was able to land an interview at a doctor's office in Alexandria and eventually landed a part-time position in the office! OAR continued to support Alexis through her reentry journey by providing transportation assistance so she could get to her new job and also provided Alexis with new work attire. We are pleased to share that Alexis is still employed and thriving there. OAR participants like Alexis get the second and fair chance they deserve thanks to your continued support.

OAR's Annual Toy Drive and Project Winter Cheer

Each year from October through early December, OAR hosts a Toy Drive to collect new, donated toys and gifts for children of parents incarcerated (ages newborn to 18 years) as a part of OAR's Project Winter Cheer program (formerly known as Project Christmas Angel) and to support all our programs. Project Winter Cheer was created in an effort to help bridge the gap between those involved in the criminal justice system and their children, as these relationships are often strained and challenged during and after incarceration. We need your help to make this a success:

  • Host a donation box! We are currently looking for businesses, organizations, and faith communities in the local area to host donation boxes to help collect gifts for the Toy Drive. Please contact Stephannie Ku at sku@oaronline.org if you are interested in hosting a donation box on behalf of OAR.
  • Host a gift card drive at your office! Often times gifts for teens are not easy to find, so we provide them with gift cards instead. The most needed are gift cards to places like Target and Amazon in increments of $10, $15, $20, or $25. Gift cards also help the parents to purchase much-needed items. Please contact Stephannie Ku at sku@oaronline.org if you are interested in hosting a gift card drive on behalf of OAR.
  • Donate gifts via OAR's Amazon Wish List! Purchase gifts and supplies through OAR's Amazon Wish List and send the items directly to the OAR office (1400 N. Uhle St, Suite 704, Arlington, VA 22201). Please include your name and contact information so we know who the donations are from.
  • Make a financial contribution! Your contributions will go towards purchasing items such as wrapping supplies and postage to mail gifts to children that live outside of the local delivery area. You can make a donation online on our website. Be sure to specify in the "Comments" section that you would like your donation to go towards OAR's Toy Drive or Project Winter Cheer.

We hope you will join us in supporting children of parents incarcerated and their families this holiday season! Stay tuned on our website and social media for more information about OAR's Toy Drive and Project Winter Cheer.

Book of the Month

OAR's "Book of the Month" is So You Want to Talk About Race by Ijeoma Oluo. In this book Oluo offers a contemporary, accessible take on the racial landscape in America, addressing head-on such issues as privilege, police brutality, intersectionality, micro-aggressions, the Black Lives Matter movement and the "N" word. Perfectly positioned to bridge the gap between people of color and white Americans struggling with race complexities, Oluo answers the questions readers don't dare ask and explains the concepts that continue to elude everyday Americans.

Oluo is an exceptional writer with a rare ability to be straightforward, funny, and effective in her coverage of sensitive, hyper-charged issues in America. Her messages are passionate but finely tuned and crystalize ideas that would otherwise be vague by empowering them with aha-moment clarity. Her writing brings to mind voices like Ta-Nehisi Coates and Roxane Gay, and Jessica Valenti in Full Frontal Feminism, and a young Gloria Naylor, particularly in Naylor's seminal essay "The Meaning of a Word."

If you are interested in checking out the book from our Race Equity Library, please stop by the OAR office and check it out!

Volunteer Spotlight

Hannah started volunteering with OAR this past year through OAR's Project Backpack program, which provides new backpacks and school supplies for children who have a parent incarcerated locally. Hannah, along with many other volunteers, provided incredible support for this program. She delivered donation boxes to multiple sites in the community that were collecting donations of new backpacks and school supplies on OAR's behalf. She also volunteered during the evenings at the OAR office and helped make guardian outreach calls to all of the families participating in the program and assisted with data entry and other administrative needs for the program. When asked about why she got involved with OAR, Hannah stated, "I deeply admire the work that OAR does to support incarcerated and formerly incarcerated individuals and their families. I want to help support those impacted by the criminal justice system and those who are often underserved and disenfranchised. OAR has a lot of great volunteer opportunities and they make it easy to help out. I am excited to continue to contribute to their awesome projects and programs!" We would not be able to do the work we do at OAR without the help and support of our amazing volunteers like Hannah. Thank you, Hannah, for all the great work you do for OAR!

Would you like to share your OAR volunteer story for a chance to be featured in future e-newsletters and on our social media? Contact sku@oaronline.org.
